Methodology Class 7/04/2011

Test techniques

1.- Choose the most and the least effective test techniques.

Most effective = Translation, because as it's said on the book "can give very quick and reliable information on what the testee does or does not know, particulary when it involves entire units of meaning (phrases, sentences).

Least effective = Dictation; I think this is not the right method for a second language learner, because there can be lots of words that they may not know, so it would be difficult for him/her to understand what the teacher is dictating.

2.- Add three other ways to evaluate. Describe and provide examples.

Reading Comprehension: This can be used to test different levels of reading, from comprehend one word of a title to comprehend the most esoteric text.
Ex:

Scientists have known for a long time that vitamin D is essential for humans. If children have a vitamin D or calcium deficiency, they can develop rickets, a softening of the bones. New studies are showing that people of all ages need vitamin D to help them fight off diseases by keeping their immune systems strong.

1. The main idea of this paragraph is that vitamin D _______.

a. is found in milk
b. has been studied by scientists
c. is no secret
d. is important for good health

2. If something is essential, it is _______.

a. harmful
b. expensive
c. dreadful
d. needed

Auditive Comprehension/Listening: This can be used on second language learners to test their ability of understanding and comprehension on what was said in the tape or whatever, I focused on idioms because it's a useful technique and it's also used by our teachers.
Ex: Some audio with a conversation and then ask to the students what was the topic of the conversation.

Oral Language: This method can be used on second language learners, and it's used in phonetics and phonology, also in conversations and presentations, it's one of the skills that is tested frecuently by teachers.
