Methodology class 16/05/2011

Box 5.2

1.- Some techniques are more popular than others. What are they, and can you account for their popularity?

Definition, description and examples. They are the most used among the teachers, because those are the basic ones and I think that is the easier and faster way to teach vocabulary (this doesn't mean most effective).

2.- Are there techniques that are particularly appropriate for the presentation of certain types of words?

I don't know xD, I prefer to say more effective than appropriate

3.- Are there techniques which are likely to be more, or less, appropriate for particular learner populations (young/adult, beginner/advanced, different background cultures)?

Illustration: It is more for children and beginner students.
Associated ideas, collocations: It is more appropriate and effective for young and adult students, because the assimilation capacity is higher.
Context: This could be difficult for children or beginners because it could include more words that they didn't know.

4.- Do you, as an individual, find that you prefer some kinds of techniques and tend to avoid others? Which? And why?

Yes I do, I think that I would prefer concise definition, examples, illustration and demonstration, because with a concise definition we can provide to the student an image of what we are talking, obviously they will need a good level of english to understand them, the examples are for complement what we try to say, illustration and demonstration are ways to do it more "fun" and don't repeat the same techniques over and over again.

  1. Good post. I disagree with leaving context for more advanced students. The effectiveness of this technique depends on the presentation and expertise of the teacher.
